ECOWAS Peace Fund Strategic Consultation to Enhance Regional Peace and Security

Abuja, Nigeria - The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is convening a special joint strategic consultation on the ECOWAS Peace Fund (EPF), from Tuesday 27 to Thursday 29 August 2024  to rejuvenate and enhance its mandate, governance, and operationality. The consultation aims to refine the Peace Fund's strategy, define principles for collaboration and partnership, establish a multi-disciplinary management structure, and identify internal and external resource mobilization opportunities.

Established in 2003, the EPF is a critical instrument for promoting peace and security in the West African region. The Fund has contributed significantly to ECOWAS peace and security initiatives, including conflict prevention, capacity building, humanitarian assistance, and peace support operations.

The consultation brings together stakeholders from ECOWAS institutions, member states, civil society organizations, and international partners to discuss the Peace Fund's achievements, challenges, and future prospects. The expected outcomes include a refined mandate and governance structure, a presented strategic plan, defined principles for collaboration and partnership, a multi-disciplinary management structure, and identified resource mobilization opportunities.

The ECOWAS Peace Fund is a vital component of the region's peace and security architecture, and this consultation marks a significant step towards enhancing its effectiveness in promoting sustainable peace and human security in West Africa
